color from vibrant blues and variegated browns to midnight black and
mottled white. It's cut into longs that require few seams. Counter fabricators typically polish granite to a high gloss, but a
matte finish is also available. Then, they treat the surface with a
sealer that makes it stain-resistant. For daily cleaning, use a
nonabrasive product designed for use on stone. Expect to pay from $75 to
over $250 per square foot, depending on the color and type of granite,
and the complexity of the fabrication.
Soapstone

common. It's porous, so treat it with mineral oil from time to time to
reduce staining. Slate has a soft matte sheen and comes in five colors:
green, red, gray, purple and black. It is virtually maintenance-free.
"Slate is nonporous and requires no sealer or surface treatment," says
designer Diane, who is a famous countertop designer in the aspect of
junction, Vt. Slates cost roughly $100 to $200 per square foot,
depending on the fabrication. Soapstone counters cost about $100 to $150
